IELTS in Canada- What type should I go for?

To be frank, this question is not to be answered by you. You should not bother choosing which type to go for, since the nature and reason for your immigration is what decides how your IELTS will be structured. In summary, IELTS is divided into:

IELTS General Training

This is for immigrants applying for skilled labour through programs like the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), Express Entry and some courses under the undergraduate degree level.

IELTS Academic

This IELTS type is for immigrants moving to Canada in order to study at the undergraduate, Postgraduate and Postdoctoral level in an English-speaking institution. This also applies to students residing in English-speaking provinces.

IELTS in Canada- How is the test structured?

The IELTS is mandatory for immigrants coming from Countries whose native language is not English. It tests the Immigrant on four basic sections of English language, namely; Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The International English Language Test (IELTS) is the only English language test approved by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Canada (IRCC) for the Student Direct Stream.

How is the test marked?

The IELTS is graded in a scale of 1 to 9. Having a score of 9 means “Expert Proficiency“. The test has no minimum score required from any applicant, but each educational organization has its own laid-down minimum required IELTS score.

The Bottom Line

Although required for immigration, not all tertiary Institutions mandate the IELTS. There are other alternatives:
